Sex Crime Penalties

In Minnesota, there are five degrees of sex crimes. Those that are first degree sex crimes, for example the rape of a child, can result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years and fines of up to $40,000. Even fifth degree crimes, such as nonconsensual sexual contact, can carry a penalty of up to a year in prison and fines of up to $3,000. You may also be sentenced to community service and mandatory rehabilitation programs. While some sex crimes are considered gross misdemeanors, many are felonies. You will not be able to have sex crimes expunged from your record and it may affect your employment and housing opportunities well into the future. In some cases, you will not be able to live within a certain distance of schools, parks and bus routes. Felony convictions also have other impacts on your civil rights.
