In Minnesota, there are five degrees of sex crimes. Those that are first degree sex crimes, for example the rape of a child, can result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years and fines of up to $40,000. Even fifth degree crimes, such as nonconsensual sexual contact, can carry a penalty of up to a year in prison and fines of up to $3,000.
